Nail & Skin Care

Ingrown toenails: when a nail grows into the skin.

Ingrown nails are a common problem that can be caused by ill-fitting shoes or improper cutting, and can also be genetic.

This may help if…

  • The side of your toenail is digging into the skin
  • Your toe is sore, swollen or red along the edge of the nail
  • Your ingrown nail keeps coming back
  • You're not sure how to cut your toenails so they don't dig in

What to expect

  1. Intake form

You'll fill in an intake form outlining your health problems, family history and any medication you're taking.

  2. Assessment

Your feet will then be assessed, and you can talk about your ingrown nail and any other problems you are experiencing.

  3. Treatment

Treatment will be provided to you accordingly, with your consent.

How an ingrown nail happens

As the nail grows out, depending on the curvature of the nail, it can pierce the skin and cause some pain, swelling, redness and possible infection. If left untreated, it can cause an increase in pain, further problems and possibly infection.

When an ingrown nail keeps coming back

A long-term solution for a recurring ingrown nail can be a partial nail avulsion, which is a procedure that removes the problematic portion of the nail.

Tips to help prevent ingrown nails

  • Make sure your toenails are trimmed and aren't kept too long.
  • Try to cut nails straight across.
  • Avoid digging into corners.
  • Don't cut the nail too short.
  • Wear comfortable, proper-fitting shoes.
