Care for Every Age

Extra care for diabetic and senior feet.

We provide foot care for people with diabetes and for seniors, with treatment that is best suited to each patient's needs.

This may help if…

  • You have diabetes and want your feet checked by a chiropodist
  • You have diabetic neuropathy and can't always feel problems in your feet
  • You find it hard to see the bottom of your feet
  • You're a senior, or care for one, and want advice on everyday foot care

What to expect

  1. Intake form

At your first appointment, you'll fill in an intake form outlining your health problems, family history and any medication you're taking.

  2. Assessment

Your feet will then be assessed and you can address any problems you are experiencing.

  3. Treatment

Treatment will be provided to you accordingly with your consent. Your chiropodist can also give you advice on footwear and everyday foot care.

Diabetes and your feet

If you have diabetes, it is important to have proper foot health. Extra care needs to be taken to avoid infection from occurring or further progression of symptoms.

Healing in diabetics

Factors that can impede healing and cause longer healing times include:

  • Alcohol use
  • Poor nutrition
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Anemia

Diabetic and senior foot care tips

  • Do not walk barefoot at home and try to wear sandals or indoor shoes.
  • Inspect your shoes and make sure there are no foreign objects before putting them on.
  • Wear clean socks with your shoes. Make sure your socks are breathable and aren't so tight that they cut off circulation, and be careful of seams in the socks.
  • It is important to wear white socks if you suffer from diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage that can reduce feeling in your feet), so that you can see any blood or discharge on your socks more easily than on coloured socks.
  • Wash your feet daily with soap and make sure they're completely dry in between the toes to prevent any fungal infections.
  • Moisturize your feet to prevent your skin from developing fissures or cracks.
  • Make sure your toenails are trimmed and aren't kept too long.
  • Keep an eye out for any cuts, ingrown nails, sores and any other changes in your skin or its colour. If you have difficulty seeing the bottom of your feet, try to feel your feet and check for cracks or blood.
  • If you choose to do a foot soak, make sure the water is lukewarm. Before stepping in, test the water with your elbow to check it's not too hot.
