Treatment for most foot problems
Sole Step is a chiropody-based clinic that provides a variety of foot care services. We deliver consistent, professional and personalized one-on-one foot and ankle care in Mississauga.
In addition to foot and ankle treatment, we also offer a range of products including custom orthotics and compression socks.
Some common problems have their own pages, including heel and arch pain, ingrown toenails, fungal toenails, and corns and calluses.
Skin
Our skin can tell us a lot about our health, and it is important to not only look at our skin, but to also touch and assess it. When we assess your feet, we check the skin's:
- Temperature. Skin that feels cool or hot can be a sign of a circulation problem or an infection.
- Colour. Colour changes can be associated with a number of health problems.
- Moisture. Whether it is extremely dry or sweaty.
- Texture. Rough or shiny skin, eczema, psoriasis, corns and calluses, fissures (cracks), sores or any discharge.
Footwear
It is important to wear comfortable, proper-fitting shoes. The inside of your shoe should be 1 cm longer than the foot to allow space and movement.
The wear pattern on the bottom of your shoes can tell you a lot about how your feet work. It can also tell your chiropodist what your gait pattern (the way you walk) typically is and what can be done to improve the function of your feet.
- Excessive wear on the outside of the shoe can mean your foot rolls outward (supination). This may come from a high arch (pes cavus) or from weakness in the muscles that turn the foot outward.
- Excessive wear on the inside of the shoe can mean your foot rolls inward a lot (pronation).
- Wear under the big toe can be a sign of hallux limitus or hallux rigidus, where the big toe isn't able to move effectively.
- A lot of wear at the tip of the shoe can point to weakness in the muscles at the front of your shin that pull your foot up as you step (the dorsiflexors). This may be linked to a nerve-related health issue or drop foot.
