What to expect

  1. Intake form

At your first appointment, you'll fill in an intake form outlining your health problems, family history and any medication you're taking.

  2. Assessment

Your feet will then be assessed and you can address any problems you are experiencing, such as heel or arch pain.

  3. Treatment

Treatment will be provided to you accordingly, with your consent.

Plantar fasciitis

One cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, a very common problem usually felt as tenderness on the bottom of the foot in the heel area. It can extend out to the arch area or stay localized in the heel. Most people find it painful first thing in the morning or when getting up after sitting for a long period of time.

How custom orthotics can help

Arch pain, heel pain, pain on the bottom of your feet, and flat feet or high arches are among the problems custom-made orthotics can help with. Through redistributing the pressure on the foot, orthotics are designed to help alleviate pain while also providing the support that is required. They are made by taking a plaster mould of the foot, and your chiropodist can tell you whether they may suit you.

Footwear

It is important to wear comfortable, proper-fitting shoes. The inside of your shoe should be 1 cm longer than the foot to allow space and movement.

The wear pattern on the bottom of your shoes can tell you a lot about how your feet work. It can also tell your chiropodist what your gait pattern (the way you walk) typically is and what can be done to improve the function of your feet.

  • Excessive wear on the outside of the shoe can indicate a supinated foot, one that rolls outward, from pes cavus (a high arch) or weakness of evertor muscles such as the peroneals, which turn the foot outward.
  • Excessive wear on the inside can indicate a lot of pronation, where the foot rolls inward.
